ABSTRACT

For many families, COVID-19 has disrupted students' higher education experience. To better understand how COVID-19 has not just impacted students but family systems, in the current study, the ABC-X model of family stress was applied to college families. The COVID-19 pandemic created stressors for college families (A), which impacted families depending on the resources available to them (B). How the families understand and perceive these stressors has impacted students' college experience (C). For college students and their families, an outcome of working to respond to these stressors could be delaying graduation, or changing academic plans (X). During October and November 2020, 3,932 parents of college students across the United States, representing more than 75 institutions, completed a 15-minute online survey. Findings revealed that families and students were differentially impacted by COVID-19, in the family stressors they experienced, and also in their academic stressors. What is particularly important in these data is that families matter-when families were supported, students did better and when parents reported a greater negative impact of COVID-19 they also reported students were less likely to maintain their graduation plans and more likely to change their academic plans. Incorporating a family lens into future research on college students is critical for advancing the field and supporting student success.

ABSTRACT

Learning business Chinese through digital materials has become an inevitable tendency with the growth of the internet and impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the increasing research-based publications and practices relating to Chinese language textbooks, there is a dearth of assessment indicators weight systems constructed by alternative research tools and statistical methods to evaluate the quality of the growing digital business Chinese materials. To the best of our knowledge, no literature review has been published on using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method to construct the assessment indicators of digital business Chinese materials. Therefore, this study aims to fill this gap by reviewing the existing, but limited, literature and providing recommendations for developing a checklist—based on the assessment indicators weight system—to evaluate digital business Chinese materials. The preliminary PC2U (Production, Content, Use, and Usefulness) assessment indicators are constructed based on the current research on business Chinese, CLTML, and relevant assessment indicators. In addition, the analysis hierarchy process (AHP) is used to construct the weight system. The results show that it is crucial to prioritize the access of digital business Chinese content. Of the three criteria in the content dimension, learning needs and credibility are equally important, and both are more important than data update. The assessment indicators are not only beneficial to fill the knowledge gap on business Chinese research, but also helpful for publishers and teachers to compile and select high quality digital business Chinese materials. © The Author(s) 2021.

ABSTRACT

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19) is a new acute respiratory infectious disease, which has strong infectivity and general susceptibility. Medical staff participating in COVID-19 are facing enormous mental and psychological pressure. In the early stage of the outbreak, in order to control the epidemic, the COVID-19 designated hospital was established to receive suspected and confirmed patients. This study focused on the mental health status of medical staff in designated hospitals at the early stage of the epidemic. We aimed to provide better psychological assistance for medical staff in designated hospitals. Methods: This study was conducted by using symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90) through network survey from Feb.4 2020 to Feb.25 2020. The mental health of medical staff in the COVID-19 designated hospital and non-designated hospital in Sichuan Province was investigated. Furthermore, the two-way ANOVA was used to evaluate the impact of the designated hospital and the non-designated hospital and gender on the mental health status of medical staff under the epidemic effect. Results: A total of 948 valid questionnaires were collected. 252 medical staff in designated hospitals completed the questionnaire, including 46 males and 206 females. A total of 696 questionnaires were completed by non-designated hospitals, including 124 males and 572 females. The designated hospital and non-designated hospital were divided into two groups. The group main effects analysis was used to analyze 10 factors of SCL90 in the two groups. The results showed that all factors of SCL90 of medical staff in designated hospitals were higher than those in non-designated hospitals. It includes somatization, obsessive-compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostile, phobic, paranoia and psychotic factors. There were interaction effects among the factors of SCL90. The results of post examination showed that there was no gender difference among medical staff in non-designated hospitals. Among the medical staff in designated hospitals, the score of male is higher than that of female. Compared with non-designated hospitals, there are significant differences in interpersonal sensitivity, somatization, anxiety, psychotic, paranoia and the total score of SCL-90 between designated hospitals and non-designated hospitals. There was no significant difference in SCL-90 score between designated hospitals and non-designated hospitals. Conclusions: In the early stage of the outbreak of covid-19, the mental health status of male medical staff in designated hospitals needs more attention, especially in their emotion, interpersonal relationship and physical symptoms. The government should provide them with timely and feasible psychological intervention. Supported by the Project of Science and Technology Department of Sichuan Province (2020ZYD013).
